Grammar

Grammar is the science and art of putting words together to make clear and meaningful sentences. Understanding grammar is necessary for students to become clear communicators and thinkers. The principles of grammar will be covered in a systematic fashion with plenty of exercises to automatize the rules.

Grammar will be integrated to history. The history course will teach the student that prehistoric man had to invent words and put them together into sentences. The first sentences were undoubtedly simple, containing a noun and a verb, such as "Leopard comes." Then came simple modifiers such as adjectives and adverbs. Over time, man invented more complex ways to express things using phrases, verbals, clauses, and so on. The invention of writing necessitated the invention of punctuation rules.

The grammar course will begin with the simplest sentence form and show how each new development allowed man to communicate more precisely and clearly. The text will explain the existential need for each part of speech and its benefit to man, thereby allowing the students to see the science of grammar in action, solving man's needs as he progresses.

Students will learn how to parse/diagram sentences, make up sentences according to specific (grammatical) instructions, pick out specified parts of speech from sentences and paragraphs, punctuate sentences that lack punctuation, identify and correct errors in erroneous sentences, rewrite sentences to achieve different emphasis, and so on. Examples will be taken from material covered in history, science, math, literature, etc., for added integration. As with math, the student will be given many exercises to help them automatize their grasp of grammar.
